Listen to Joe's story about his voyage, and some of the belongings he brought with him....

Interview: Joe Alves August 8, 2000 by Patricia Rodrigues

Voyage

I came to the United States when I was fifteen years old. It was during the great work crisis, the Depression. I came through Lisbon, on a steamship. The Fanny Bell, took me from Brava to Praia. The ship that I took from Lisbon to Providence, RI was an Italian steamship called the Patria. It was in 1929, I was fifteen years old.

What he brought

I brought a few dollars in my pocket. That’s all. Oh and two suits. Then I sent them back.
Interviewer: Any pictures?
Joe: No, in those days pictures were not like they are today. In those days you had to go to the studio to take pictures.
