Schooner Ernestina is docked in Vineyard
Haven today with 17 Elderhostelers aboard in the
midst of a six-day program that will finish in
New Bedford on Saturday morning, June 3rd. The inset image shows
the 156' Ernestina at the dock in Vineyard Haven
at Tisbury Wharf courtesy of Packer's Fuel and
Ralph Packer. For scale the harbor is about 2000
feet or 1/3 nautical mile across (one nautical
mile equals 6,080 feet). You can see the track
from Tuesday as the ship tacked back and forth up
into Vineyard Sound enroute to Vineyard Haven.
Naushon Island is about six nautical miles long
and the Vineyard Sound is about three miles wide.
Elderhostel
participants and some crew are enjoying some
shoreside showers and visits to a few local
boatyards and museums. At 1900 tonight we have
the privelege of a special guest visitor, Fred
Littleton, who will show some movies of his trip
aboard the Effie M. Morrissey (previous name of
Ernestina) with Captain Bob Bartlett.
The ship will
depart tomorrow morning for an anchorage near New
Bedford for the last night at sea.
