Ernestina Logbook Page

Date: Tuesday, July 25, 2000
Time: 1700 EDT

Schooner Ernestina lays alongside at the historic Adams and Knickles Dock. Just down the street is the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, Lunenburg Foundry, a Dory Shop, and Daphne & Sons Block Factory. This town is a favorite for the ship!

At right the images show the selection of schooners in town including the Sherman Swicker, Bluenose II, Harvey Gamage, Lettie G. Howard along with the square-rigged Rose.

For the morning we prepare for the arrival of participants coming from Boston's New England Aquarium Schooner Adventures Program via the Scotia Prince ferry from Portland to Yarmouth and thanks to Alan Creaser of the Grand Banker Seafood Bar and Grill for arranging the transportation on to Lunenburg by bus. They arrive just after lunch and are shown loading gear aboard before setting off for a tour of the Barque Picton Castle.

The crew go off for a trip through the Fisheries Museum and for last minute purchases in Canada before a 1600 departure. Next stop Portland with an anchorage tonight.

Just before departure Senator Wilfred Moore from the Bluenose II, Alan Creaser and Harbormaster Bill Towndrow came by for a presentation of a commemorative boat spike from the refit of the Bluenose II in 1995 and first day cover of the Tall Ships 2000 event. Capt. Dan Moreland, previous captain and director of Ernestina, instrumental in the restoration efforts and now captain of Picton Castle, was along also for a sendoff as we departed.

If you want to learn more about Lunenburg take a look at their website.

Weather looks fairly good for the next several days with a ridge of high pressure building over us with light winds and then building SEly breezes.

The lower chart image to the right shows our route from Lunenburg to Liverpool Harbor with insets of our first stretch of coast from Rose Point and then the anchorage in Liverpool Bay 35 miles along.

You can see the Ocean Sunfish that swam in close to the ship for a look (his eye rises above the water as he swims on his side with dorsal and anal fin occasionally breaking the surface. We saw white sided dolphins and a Minke Whale as well.

Wind: light
Visibility: Fog rolling in thick in the afternoon. Lifting by departure time.

Captain: Gregg Swanzey
Program Coordinator: Crista Mellican

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
