Ernestina Logbook Page

Date: Monday, August 7, 2000
Time: 1641 EDT

Schooner Ernestina approaches the Weepecket Islands just outside Woods Hole on the Buzzards Bay side now with a group of teachers from the Portraits of a Port Summer Institute funded by the MA Department of Education and sponsored by the New Bedford Public Schools, New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Schooner Ernestina.

The teachers are in their second week of an intensive ten-day program having spent five days ashore hearing from experts in local history and culture and visiting some of the many historic resources in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

The experience puts history teachers in touch with the maritime experience, so much a part of human history, and also poses the emmigrant-passage making-immigrant experience during the three days at sea.

This is one of three of Ernestina's Institutes with "Maritime Mathematics" just completed and "Sea Connections" coming up in a week.
