Schooner Ernestina passes Cleveland Ledge
in Buzzards Bay after sailing off anchorage at
Aucoot Cove this morning with "Portraits of
a Port" Summer Institute teachers aboard. We sail under four lowers with a single
reefed main for good sail balance.
As we arrive in New Bedford at
1430 to come to anchor under yellow quarentine
flag after our "crossing" from
"mother lands." The "customs and
immigrations" officials will be looking for
us to clear all aboard in to America (we hope).
The hope is, for this program,
that history teachers bring to heart both our
maritime heritage and immigrant experience by
sailing the last of the trans-Atlantic packet
schooners, Ernestina, while emulating in a way,
in three days, what might have happened over
three months for many of our ancestors coming to
America by sea. The food is better now, no doubt!
