All hands up for breakfast and
orientation to life and education aboard the boat
for a weeklong Upward Bound Program underway to
New Bedford from Fall River. The skies were
overcast and a brisk NE wind proved to be
favorable to sail with fore and jumbo down the
Taunton River. We got
underway from Fall River about 1100 and were able
to shut the engine off for most the rest of the
day. Under the Newport Bridge we spoke a bit
about Newport, Fort Adams and Castle Hill before
discussing emergencies and procedures and
conducting emergency drills. The MOB
(manoverboard) float was retrieved back on board
in four and a half minutes, and the engine room
fire (drill) was put out with extinguishers. With
the fire hoses out we stood down from the drills
giving the decks a good washing.
The wind died down about 1700
and we ended up motorsailing the last few miles
into Harbor of Refuge off Point Judith for 1830
dinner at anchor.
The students performed two
water quality tests during the day, one as we
left the Taunton River and one at anchor in Point
Judith. The water temperature and salinity were
consistent at both sites 21 C and 27 ppt. The
Taunton River sample was taken at the top of the
flood tide which may explain the salinity even at
the top of the bay. The dissolved oxygen was
different, the Taunton river sample had 5.5 ppm
and the Pt. Judith sample was 7.2 ppm.
Rain seemed imminent as the
evening went on.
