Late today we were sailing under four
lowers, main tops'l and jib tops'l. Fog had
cleared, breeze filled in from SE. Schooner
Spirit of Massachusetts came out of Salem Sound
to show her stuff as we sailed with th Gamage and
Lettie. Ernestina was first of the three to clear
Cape Ann, and we made our way towards Salem
sound. This afternoon, we
sailed into Salem Channel to anchor for the
night. We're tired from the 115 nautical mile
passage overnight!
We anchored north of Misery I,
in Salem Sound, at 1400, struck all sail except
for the mains'l and waited to rendezvous with the
Lettie and Gamage for evening. We readied dories
for evening races between the schooners. About
two hours later the schooners joined us with a
terrific show, sailing on to the hook nearby.
A dory race followed; a sort of
relay race against watches from Schooner to
Schooner. A couple entrants got a soaking during
the transfer of teams, since these boats were not
loaded with COD (as in the old fishing days), and
are not very stable when light. Swim call for all
boats after.
Evening program included Skits
and Music after another great supper from the
Galley.
Lights out early as we say
goodbye to August, and prepare for the final day
of the trip.
Wind: light going SW'ly
Visibility: Good with calm seas.
