We are dockside at Fan Pier at the
Federal Court House Building in Boston after an
educational program this morning. The crew were up early again today and
off the dock before breakfast to motor out to
Pemberton Pier in Hull where students from Hull
Memorial Junior High School came aboard at 0930
for a four-hour program.
The wind was just right for
sail setting right at the dock as we were tied
up. All hands could work to raise the 3000 pound
mains'l and fores'l up before letting go the
lines and rounding the point through the gut to
sail out the Narrows and the Boston North Channel
into Broad Sound.
Five interactive stations
introduced students to Navigation, Marine Life
(plankton net over), Mechanical Advantage
(physics and technology of a 106-year-old
schooner), Tools of the trade, and History.
We took advantage of the great
wind and great weather to sail out and back, only
using the engine to get on and off the dock.
Many thanks to Cynthia Gordon
for her efforts to pull another year of programs
off for Hull! Thanks also to the Boston Marine
Society for their sponsorship that has enabled
hundreds of students to experience the Harbor
Islands, an experience at sea and the historic
schooner.
After the sail, the crew
brought the ship back to the Inner Harbor to
prepare for tomorrow's sail with Outdoor
Explorations. Three cheers for Samantha Heyman
for her great work on Ernestina! Today was her
last day aboard as mate before leaving Ernestina
for a captain's job with the Hudson River Sloop
Clearwater in New York.
You can see the Nubble Channel
past Nixes Mate we took with the high tide to get
back into Boston. There are many great places to
explore in the Boston Harbor Islands! We
sometimes bring groups out for overnight programs
on Gallops Island.
