Today was another
beautiful fall day. We boarded 41
sophomores and seniors from Durfee High School's
ecology and marine science classes. Mt.
Hope Bay provided the perfect setting for the
five learning stations that day, including
navigation, plankton, history, knot tying and a
turn at the helm. All students enjoyed the
chance to experience education outside of the
classroom. This sail was
sponsored by the Southeastern Environmental
Education Alliance (SEEAL) under the auspices of
the Community Foundation of Southeastern MA with
funding thanks to the Sudbury Foundation, Henry
H. Crapo Charitable Foundation and the
Massachusetts Environmental Trust.
The green image on the chart
shows our track for this sail. The purple
track shows our member sail. Note that the purple
track took and electronic jump over an island....
There are some track points missing during that
short stretch taking the ship a little further
south in the channel befor making the turn to
Providence.
We departed Fall River for the
last time this season with members on board at
1345. Also on board was Marty Tullock and
his students from Falmouth High School with ,
Joel Sullivan and his students from Westport High
School as well as some new faces and many
familiar ones. We made our way to
Providence under six sails, striking all as the
sun set.
Ernestina sailed into
Providence regularly as a Cape Verdean packet
schooner between 1948 and 1965. Back then the
ship came in to exchange cargo and passengers for
trans-Atlantic passage on an annual cycle (one
round trip each year) with the dock location then
being nearby at India Point just inside where the
hurricane gate stands today. Too bad we can't get
into the river to the old dock or to run
alongside the gondolas during
"WaterFire!"
We look forward to building
more collaborative programs with Providence along
with the Sloop Providence, official vessel of
Rhode Island, and the Cape Verdean community.
We're working on an idea involving the art
communities of Providence, Newport and New
Bedford for next year!
