Today Pam Moore, 19 students and four
additional staff joined us from the Charles River
School. We all kept an eye on the weather
as the overnight trip had been rescheduled from
September 26th and 27th due to heavy weather the
last time, and the skies and forecast today
threatened us with a bit of rain tonight The sixth grade students were eager,
willing and attentive and we set sail from the
Seekonk River at 1100 after an orientation and
briefing at the dock. Their course of study
this year includes oceanography, water systems,
topography and physical sciences. As we transited
the Providence River into Narragansett Bay,
Inette explored charts, maps, and bathymetric
data with the students, while others looked at
the block and pulley systems that were used to
raise the mainsail.
The students all participated
in watches, steering and navigating the Ernstina
through Buzzards Bay to our berth in New
Bedford. We arrived shortly before 2200,
and the rain only fell lightly.
Chocolate chip cookies were a
hit and a few songs were sung before bed.
Up early the next morning most everyone climbed
aloft or out on the bowsprit and learned about
the history of the ship before their bus arrived
to take them home.
