Todays
sail with New Bedford High was sponsored by the
Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance
(SEEAL) under the auspices of the Community
Foundation of Southeastern MA with funding thanks
to the Sudbury Foundation, Henry H. Crapo
Charitable Foundation and the Massachusetts
Environmental Trust. We
took advantage of light winds out of the SW
thanks to help from 42 New Bedford High School
students along with their teacher, Andy Kulak.
They helped us raise our four lower sails. As
soon as our sails were set, the students broke
into six groups and were guided by a crew member
through teaching stations. The students then went
below to see the living areas and learn what
its like to live on board now compared to
106 years ago. They collected plankton samples
and figured out the salinity level of the water.
Some students had the opportunity to steer the
vessel while others were assisting on bow watch
or learning navigation techniques.
