We
had a good trip today, but it was a long day.
Departed at 0815 from New Bedford State Pier
bound for Fall River Buzzards Bay, Rhode Island
Sound and Narraganesett Bay past Newport and set
the 'Four Lowers' (Mains'l, Fores'l, Jumbo and
Jib) with 19 members and 12 crew. Had excellent
visibility, and light Northerly to start off. Set
the Jib Topsail (or Ballooner) off Round Hill as
the wind backed to a light Southerly. Had a great
Lunch on Deck that was prepared in the Galley by
our New Cook, Brenda Candida. We enjoyed a soup
with fresh New Bedford Scallops from a local
boat. The wind shifted a little, then filled in
from the SSW, building to Force 4. We gybed at
Castle Hill at the entrance to Narragansett Bay,
and made our way up the East Passage towards Fall
River. Gybing the huge mainsail of Ernestina is a
task for All Hands, and we managed to
test the skills of all onboard 3 more times as we
ran downwind 'bye the lee". Entering Mt.
Hope Bay, the Schooner set off on a broad reach,
and picked up speed to 9 knots. Soon we were
striking sail, and getting the docklines out for
our arrival. We had a fine dinner alongside as
the sun dissappeared behind the power station at
Brayton Point. We finished out the day logging 49
nautical miles. It is hard to beat sails like
this where members can join us for an extended
journey! The charts at right show the track of
the ship past Newport and the maneuvering
necessary for the gybe off Taylor Point. The
lower chart shows the dockage location at Fall
River Line Pier adjacent to Fall River Heritage
State Park.
