Dartmouth High School sailed today with science and horticultural classes aboard. Juniors and Seniors could come, sophomores were back at school taking the MCAS tests. The weather was very cool with a brisk wind from the North. The fores'l and jumbo went up and drove the ship along just fine past Butler's Flat out of New Bedford Harbor. We passed the clamboats using hydraulic dredges on the way out and were overtaken by the Marthas Vineyard ferry in for service at the new Steamship Authority Maintenance Facility on the Fairhaven waterfront.

Aboard for this sail today was a film crew getting footage for a production about education and advocacy as well as actions for a cleaner Buzzards Bay. Margaret Brumsted, Dartmouth HS science teacher and Ernestina's director were interviewed aboard with Seth Garfield, Buzzard Baykeeper, coming alongside with M/V Baykeeper to take the film crew and Nina Danforth, project manager from DEM, and David Janik, Buzzards Bay Team Leader from EOEA back to New Bedford for more interviews with Mark Rasmussen at the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, Jim Simmons at Hands Across the Waters and Emily Johns, teacher in the Winslow School (New Bedford).

The image below shows our new depth sounder recently installed thanks to Raytheon. We are going to sail with company employees in September in exchange. Water temperature today is 55.4F as we cruised along at 5.4 knots with the bottom 31.6 feet below the transducer.

The image on lower right shows crew getting the inflatable over as we came back to the dock. We use this boat to thrust the bow when maneuvering in tight quarters. The strong North wind made dockage tricky. Notice the 15 horsepower 4-stroke outboard. 4-stroke engines are much cleaner than 2-strokes. The better efficiency and savings in maintenance recover the extra cost within a short time.

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
