Auburn
Middle School Day 4 and a transit from New
Bedford to Greeenport, Long Island starts. The
fourth and final day of the Auburn 7th grade was
as beautiful as the rest. Again the
students put there muscles to work to raise a
full complement of lower sails and then turned
eagerly to the program at hand. For many,
it was the first time experiencing and seeing the
coastline like this. Being the Official
Vessel of the Commonwealth, it's a great
opportunity for us to share out mission and state
resource with communities inland.
Thanks to the efforts of Jeff Rudert, this
program was introduced to and organized for
the Auburn Schools.

Transit New Bedford to Greenport, NY
We left State Pier just before five o'clock
under fair skies and a light breeze bound for
Greenport. Only one member was joining us
for this trip. The weather remained
good as the winds picked up before dusk. We set
the storm tris'l anticipating the winds
to stay for the night and to allow
easier sail handling for the on watch crew.
By morning the breezes were light and we enjoyed
a beautiful day coasting slowly along through
Block Island Sound. We held off kicking in
the engine till later, but eventually it had to
be done. Mid afternoon we were approaching
Greenport Harbor. Greenport is a modern
boating community and weekend hot spot,
but holds a rich heritage and appreciation
for old boats like ourselves. We
received a warm welcome and a lot of curious
attention docking along side the motor
yachts and cigarette boats at Claudio's
Dockside Restaurant.
