UMASS BOSTON "Exploring the Coastal
Environment" The
foggy morning in Nantucket turned into a hot
sunny afternoon as we welcomed on board our new
Voyaging Crew. Ten college students and their
professor Dr. Jack Looney from UMASS Boston are
sailing with us for the next 6 days in order to
complete the requirements for their course
Exploring the Marine Environment. In addition to
the college students we have four high school
students that will be sailing with us. Two are
sons of one of the college students, and two are
recent high school graduates who won a
scholarship to be here by writing a convincing
essay. As soon as all new crew were aboard and
introductions made, we wasted no time and
proceeded to get underway. Our plan is to sail to
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 140 nautical miles
away, so we will sail through the night with our
new crew learning all the responsibility that
goes along with standing watches.
We set the Four lowers outside
the Harbor, and caught the fair current at Great
Round Shoal before dark. The chart image shows
our course north and east of Nantucket. Heavy Fog
settled in as soon as we cleared Great Point.
All through the night students
stood watch , and took turns at the Helm, and
Lookout. The Ships fog signal continued until
well into the second day. The cruise track shows
us crossing the Boston Ship Traffic Lanes east of
Cape Cod at approx 0200 Sunday morning.
