UMASS BOSTON "Exploring the Coastal
Environment" The
last day of our week long trip With UMASS Boston
began at anchor in Boston Harbor. We spent the
night just west of Peddocks Island and Perry
Cove. Anchor watch was handled by Watches A,B,C.
The weather was quiet, and Heavy Fog settled over
the Harbor before Daylight. All hands were called
at 0600. We had a fine breakfast, at anchor,
prepared by our steward Monika B-C. Then, after
basic morning chores, We gathered aft to prepare
for the biggest event of the week. FIELD DAY!!!
A thorough cleaning of the
ship.
After field day was complete,
at 0930, the watch on deck hauled back the
Starboard Anchor, and we lit off the Main Engine.
With the Wind light, and visibility less than a
tenth of a Nautical Mile, we made our way slowly,
at a safe speed, towards the Inner Harbor. For
eight miles, around the Harbor Islands, and
through the Nubble Channel, a vigilant Bow watch,
Radar Watch, and resonating Ships Horn (one
prolonged Blast every 2 minutes), helped guide
the Schooner around Islands, and other Harbor
Traffic.
The photo shows one of the Red
Bell Buoys in view along President Roads. Soon
after the picture was taken, we were passing
Governers Island, now home to Logan Airport.
Through the fog, hands on deck could hear other
ship traffic, motors, voices and horn signals, as
well as Aircraft making the Approach to Logan.
We happened to pass under the
glide path, at a slow speed to avoid small boat
traffic, when a LARGE Jet could be heard on the
approach. Just as the Roar of the turbines was
too much to take, a Federal Express jetliner
appeared overhead, just above the Masts. It
disappeared just as quickly and we saw the
strobes of the Landing strip to Starboard.
Exciting.
We carried on, and about ½
mile from downtown Boston the visibility improved
to more than 1 mile.
We came alongside dock #1 at
Rowes Wharf about 1115, and prepared to say
farewell to Umass Boston students. All hands
gathered aft, and were presented with
Certificates of completion, and a little summary
of the voyage from Nantucket , to Isles of
Shoals, to Portsmouth, to Stellwagen and
Gloucester, and finally to Boston. 313 Nautical
Miles travelled, in rain, sun , fog. What a great
trip!
We also sang Happy Birthday to
Micheala, and presented a few gifts.
Finally we said a special
thanks to DR. Jack Looney. He has put this
program together for the past 4 years. We hope to
continue the tradition.
