Member Sail in the Fog The weather was a little gray but belied
the gloom that awaited Ernestina as she slipped
outside the hurricane barrier. Although our first
hour after escaping New Bedford harbor was quite
pleasant, sailing under all four lowers and with
an impending frontal passage on the horizon, the
ship was soon engulfed in a thick and eerie fog.
Our hair and clothing dampened but not our
spirits, No! Thanks to Tom Goux and his
Travelling Minstrel Show. Tom and his cast of
choral champions again treated us to song after
song, performing a capella as well as with
accompaniment by recorder, guitar and concertina.
Despite the poor visibility, several other
vessels managed to track us down us by homing in
on our Pied Pipers piping.
