I don't know who looks forward to our programs
each season with Outdoor Explorations more, the
the participants and staff of OE or our own crew
members. OE is an organization geared to
individuals with disabilities. They use the
outdoors and experiential activities to help
participants break down barriers in all aspects
of community life while advancing in self
discovery and personal growth.
Today we set out with an ambitious task, to
raise our lower sails then divide into learning
groups where all would participate in at least
five of the six educational stations (including
and chance to plot our navigational track, steer
the boat, examine plankton and do some tug of war
experiments with our block and tackle systems on
board).
After a great lunch spread, many of our
participants took the opportunity to climb out on
the bowsprit and up our 19th century style
ratlines to get a better view aloft. It
always makes us feel good to hear comments like
"I've never done something like that
before", or "I didn't think I would get
up so high, I'm afraid of heights!" It
was a great day. I think the smiles tell it
all.
Several sails each year are
with Outdoor
Explorations involving
a full day experience out to the Harbor Islands
and back.
