Waldorf
School of Cape Cod stepped aboard this morning
with 13 students and two staff for a four-day
trip starting in Woods Hole bound for New London,
CT. The weather turned out to be a big factor for
this program with a series of low pressure
systems tracking along a front that runs along
the entire Eastern Seaboard setting up a rainy,
wet and windy start. You can see the image below
right from Intellicast.com produced by the WSI
Corporation. There's a low over us now! As you
can see from the chart images, the ship got under
way this morning from Dyer's Dock with a slight
boost in current coming out of Woods Hole but
then 2 to 3 knots against us. Good thing the tide
turns and we had a fair breeze!
With the opportunity of a fair breeze and the
prediction of the wind going SW and then W and
increasing into late Tuesday to Wednesday, we
decided to head to the protected waters of the
Sakonnet and Narragansett Bay for the first day.
The wind was Estly/ SEstly force 4 most of the
day and we felt a bit more sea after the lee of
Marthas Vineyard.... It did get a little bumpy
crossing Rhode Island Sound, but then we got in
with anchor down and cranked up some heaters down
in the holds. You can see the track for the day
on the second chart image.
Student Report:
Today was the 1st day of our trip.
Cold. When we got on the boat it was already
raining. Cold. Everyone was in rain gear. Cold.
We had deck and hold orientations. Cold. When we
left everyone was in high spirits. Cold.
Unfortunately as soon as we left a storm moved
overhead. Cold. As the boat rocked many grew
sick. Cold. We unfurled the sails and we were at
sea. Cold I stood watch for an hour or so and it
is clearly the best job. Cold. Lunch and dinner
were delicious. Cold. My watch is coming so,
later. Cold. Very cold-
