We departed the State Pier on Friday
afternoon with 11 After-school participants,
Polly Zajac, Chris Stone (volunteer), and 12
crew. Many students were familiar
with the ship as most had gone out on a daysail,
one on an overnight and two who had never been on
board before. In two hours all the ships
company raised sail, coiled down, steered the
ship, laid out 90 feet of heavy anchor chain and
furled the sails all in thick fog. All were
happy when dinner came and now we are all
enjoying the anchorage on the East side of West
Island. After School
Program - Underway 6/1/02
Today
wake-up call was at 0630 but most of the fishhold
was empty as the boys began their day much
earlier fishing for lunch. Michael Carreiro
caught his first fish from the aft deck - 2 scup
at once and a sea robin. By 0645, we had bucket
of scup ready for cleaning! We had a delicious
all-hands breakfast at 0700 and broke into chores
after. After an all-hands muster, we were more
than happy to go rowing in the dories. The wind
was blowing hard and it was difficult because the
waves were not in our favor.
To cool off after all that hard
rowing, some of us brave (crazy!!) souls went for
a dip in the ocean. The Raytheon fish finder was
showing a water temperature of 60.1 degrees but
that didn't stop us. Thanks to Scott Cann for
going in with us. Although the water was
freezing, it really felt refreshing. After all
the swimmers were warm and dry, we short stayed
the anchor, raised the fore and jumbo sails and
finished hauling back on the anchor.
Shortly after getting underway,
the otter trawl was released. We caught a large
variety of sea life such as a male little skate,
hermit crabs, spider crabs, an oyster toadfish,
squid, and sea squirts. We even dragged up two
large sections of sponge. Leda gave us great
information about some of the creatures we pulled
up and Ashley De Terra did a great job recording
all the species.
Kenny did a get job cooking our
morning catch and we all enjoyed the scup. We
spent the afternoon sailing and climbing the
rigging and the going out on the bowsprit.
Congratulations to Donald Rodrigues who worked
extremely hard to overcome his fear of heights
and climbed the ratlines!
As we approached New Bedford
Harbor, we packed up our bunks and prepared to
see our families again. We really appreciate the
funding for this sail from Mayor Kalisz's
Invest-In-Kids After School Program.
