It was a scorching hot, hazy, humid day
when participants from the New Bedford Community
Boating Center arrived at Tonnesen Park, on the
State Pier, to meet the ERNESTINA on Thursday
morning. After a brief introduction to each
other, the crew, and the ship, we departed the
dock and set sail, bound for Cuttyhunk Island on
the other side of Buzzards Bay. A quick snack was put out by the steward
Monika, and the crew started to engage the
students in what it is like to live and work
onboard the ERNESTINA. Being lookout, steering,
safe navigation, sail handling, sail theory, and
the ever-elusive boat check were all part of the
education program for the afternoon sail across
Buzzards Bay. Strong southwesterly breeze allowed
ERNESTINA to sail close to her anchoring place
where the 4th of July evening led to
games and watching fireworks. The permanent crew
and CBC students kept the ship and her shipmates
safe through the night while standing anchor
watches.
You can see the ship's track
coming in and then departing our anchorage inside
Penikese, Cuttyhunk and Nashawena Islands in the
Elizabeth Island Chain. Too bad we can't make it
in to Cuttyhunk Harbor like the Alert II can.
Alert II sails from the New Bedford waterfront
[across the slip from Ernestina's dock] to bring
passengers out to Cuttyhunk on a regular service.
