Expecting light crowds for our 10-2 Open
Ship (on this wet weekday morning) we planned a
number of maintenance projects on the ship for
today, like various scrape-and-paint projects. In
the mid-morning the skies cleared and a steady
stream of visitors-65 by day's end-began to step
across the rail. Many were travelers from
afar-even one group from the UK!-and asked many
great questions about the boat, her history, and
life onboard. We displaced our scrape-and-paint
project on the aft cabin top to display the
historic photographs, which entertained kids of
all ages. Crew rotated through talking with
visitors, sneaking in a little work on the boat,
and eating lunch at lunchtime. At 1400 we broke into full-tilt scraping
a priming of the aft cabin top and paint
touch-ups on the rails, cleaning some of our
educational science equipment, and catching up on
other work around the boat. Crew were stood down
til 2000 hours when we prepared for the evening
program. Daisy Nel, Capt. Stan and friends played
a few sea tunes before and as we hoisted the
foresail up for showing LEGACY, a documentary
about the Gloucester fishing schooners featuring
our own Capt. Amanda Madeira and other local
experts on these finest working sailing vessels.
At about 2130 we struck the
fore and stood down from this very full day!
