Twenty-four Ross School students and
three faculty boarded Ernestina in Greenport, NY. After leaving the dock and setting sail,
lunch was provided for us all to keep up our
strength after hauling up the four lowers, with a
single reefed mains'l.
After the galley was cleaned up
students undertook an art project of drawing
simple machines about the boat and learning
about traditional navigation. These classes
were provided by the Ross School faculty.
Ernestina crew then started teaching the students
about sail theory, navigation, and weather.
All of these topics had a focus on their
relevance to early exploration.
Dropping the hook and eating
supper were the next activities leading into an
evening program where the crew learned
some of the Ernestina history from the
students. Skits were performed by watch and
some of the ridicules things that were supposedly
part of the Ernestina history were that Mr.
Morrissey, the first owner of Ernestina, shot his
daughter Effie, and he was actually a French
rapper who read the Bible. A great laughs
for sure!
Anchor watches throughout the
night kept Ernestina and her crew safe. We
then saw the students off after a classic
pancake morning. Thanks for a great 24
hours!

The evening skits drew on bits and pieces of
