Relatives from as far
away as Honolulu, Hawaii and San Luis Obispo, California
gathered with David and June Wallace of Westport, MA to
celebrate their 50th anniversary aboard the Schooner Ernestina
today. Threatening skies greeted the Wallace family at
State Pier for their 11am-4pm sail but shortly after getting
underway, the clouds dissipated and bright sunshine filled the
skies. All hands helped raise the
main, fore, jumbo, and jib. Steve Swift, the ship's
engineer had a gathering of people to listen to the history of
Schooner Ernestina, Katherine Lindsay guided some of the
younger members of the Wallace family in a discovery of
plankton, while others ventured out onto the bowsprit. Members
of the New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey chorus including Vi
Taylor, Jack Dolan, Chuck Smiler, David, Brownell, Charlie
Howland, and Polly Zajac entertained the family with songs of
the sea. David said, "We expected a great sail
and what we got was even better. Many thanks to the
Director Gregg, Captain Amanda, Program Director Rhonda, the
crew, and the Sea Chantey Chorus." We
wish the Wallaces many more years of wedded bliss surrounded
by loving family. Many thanks to them for bringing their
family and friends aboard Ernestina and the warmest regards! Program Coordinators: Rhonda
Moniz
Captain: Amanda Madeira
