"The time I spent
on the Schooner Ernestina helped to enhance my understanding
of what daily life on an ocean vessel is like. The
chores and responsibilities I was privileged to undertake,
along with my crewmates was truly a good time. Where
else can one climb 60 feet or steer a 156 foot boat?
Although it was hot my first time in a sail boat, I am a good
enough sailor to know that in this boat, the unique crew was
positive and outgoing. Their willingness and wit when it comes
to manning a boat truly unparalleled to any other boat
trip that I have had. The crew members in charge of my watch
"C" watch (which included Lizzy, Adam and Sam)
taught us a lot during our night watches and duties
about the importance of paying constant attention to the boat,
its whereabouts and wellfare. I trust that the experience I
had is similar to many who came before me and will will come,
so I subsequently hope the Ernestina will set sail many more
times." ~Scott Runyon, Age 15
"Being on the Ernestina has been a
great experience. we learned a lot through our activities and
the classes the crew gave. Since we could experience so much
like steering and raising the sail it gave us a chance to
understand how the original sailors had to do things. other
things like swimming and going on to the bowsprit of a 108
year old ship is an experience that will not soon be
forgotten. Also it was good to see the crew didn't always eat
gruel. The food was great. In the end the food was good, the
crew was hospitable and the trip was memorable. Thanks to the
crew and we hope that the ship has many more years." ~Mike
Ross, Age 15
During the three-day trip we covered 140
nautical miles! We got in to New Bedford by 1600. Great trip! Program
