So it's
all hands at 0600. We're all up for breakfast early and, once
squared away, haul back the anchor... Anchor aweigh is when
then the capstan crew have lifted the anchor clear of the
bottom. To be sure, they
are up on board the Cramer just forward of Ernestina
watching our departure with coffee cups in hand. There is
great admiration for all the maritime history the ship
represents. We have good friends aboard of there and some have
previously crewed on our ship! They will be departing
later in the morning. All are on deck to observe the Ernestina's
departure from the Cove. Many
of us from New Bedford know John Bullard, Mayor in the
late 80s/early 90s, who recently came on as Executive Director
for the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole. The Cramer
is an SEA vessel offering program for teachers and primarily
semesters at sea for college students. After
getting underway, the Ernestina motored for Vineyard Haven on
Marthas Vineyard. We docked at Tisbury Wharf thanks to the
generosity of Ralph Packer who owns the wharf. Vineyard
Haven is an interesting stop. Gannon & Benjamin own
schooners like the When & If (General George Patton's
boat in the 40s) and are building schooner in sheds near
the waterfront. As
always, we enjoy the visit to the ship by Fred Littleton who
sailed to the Arctic in 1940 with Bartlett and assisted Reggie
Wilcox in filming the Pathe Newsreels. Program
