This
morning at 0900, 17 students from the Rhode Island
Children’s Crusade boarded the Ernestina. The group
consists of students from various high schools throughout
Rhode Island, including Newport, Jamestown, and Providence.
After some safety and boat orientation, we left the dock with
light winds and the students broke up into watches to begin
running the vessel. With the three-day trip underway,
student took turns learning how to tie knots, how to navigate
and the basics of sail theory. They also spent time on
the bowsprit enjoying the view. After
a day spent sailing out the Providence River into Narragansett
Bay, the Ernestina and her crew anchored off the western side
of Prudence Island for the night. With a good meal under
their belts, they spent the evening immersed in group
initiatives and games: untangling their human knots, and
getting to know each other better. After a spectacular
sunset, students took turns throughout the night joining the
crew standing anchor watch while the rest of boat slept. Program
