This
morning our third and final group from the Rhode Island
Children's Crusade boarded the Ernestina. This group of
students comes from high schools around the state to spend 3
days onboard with us. Before
getting underway, the student went through orientation and
safety and met in watch groups to prepare for journey. We left
the dock by 1015 and with everyone's help, set the four
lowers, and began sailing down the Providence River into
Narragansett Bay. The
participants in watches began to learn how to run the ship,
doing boat checks, steering the Ernestina, and standing bow
watch. Students off watch took time to learn navigation,
knots and sail theory. On our way past Newport, we
passed the Jeannie Johnston, the Aurora, and the
Adirondack II, and J-Boat Endeavor as well as a
variety of modern sailboats before entering Rhode Island
Sound. With some larger
swells out in the sound, we made our way downwind to the
Sakonnet River where we stuck sails and set the anchor.
Our picturesque anchorage was the perfect setting for the
night, and after dinner the participants took part in some
team building and leadership activities. By 9:30
students turned in for the night to get some sleep before
anchor watch. Program
