Day 1: BU
students, along with their professor, Dr. Tim Walker, met the Ernestina
in New Bedford and boarded the ship bound for a first stop by
the evening in Newport, RI thirty-five miles away by sea.
After being welcomed aboard and oriented to the ship, students
set sails and headed for anchorage outside Goat Island off
Newport, RI near Fort Adams. On the journey students began to
learn navigation skills and chart reading in the able hands of
the professional crew on board the Ernestina. Students were
broken into watches and given responsibility while guided by
crew members.
Day 2: After a night of anchor
watch the students woke at 6am for chores and a dory row.
Along with several crew and Dr. Walker, the students rowed the
dories ashore to Fort Adams for an investigation of the
historical fort before getting back in the dories for a tow
over to the ship building museum at the International Yacht
Restoration School (IYRS). Students observed apprentices
engaged in the fine art of
shipbuilding from one of the most prestigious yacht
restoration facilities in the country. By
lunchtime the ship was underway again for the next stop in
Stonington, CT to anchor next to Schooner Alabama for
the night. Program

Our anchorage was in the
outer harbor, Newport is very crowded further in the channel.
