Schooner Sound Learning
Six-day Transit New Haven, CT to Boston, MA

August 4, 2003
Day 2: Transit Falkner Island to Padanaram

Here is the track from the first two days showing orange from New Haven to Falkner Island and then brown all the way out Long Island Sound, through Fishers Island Sound (to avoid The Race), across Block Island Sound and on to Padanaram in Dartmouth, MA.

Underway early, we were up at 0600 and sailed off toward an anchorage in Buzzards Bay. This will be the longest passage of the trip in one day with more than 100 miles to cover. We expect to not stop until late in the evening at an anchorage near New Bedford.

Since this is the first full day underway, much of the focus is on learning about the ship and settling into the rhythm of the ship.

We checked the tide tables and found that the tide at "The Race" turned against us by 1030 in the morning and would run the wrong way all day. Tide runs more than 5 knots at maximum! The Race is off Orient Point on Long Island and is across from Fishers Island on the Connecticut side.

Falkner Island to Padanaram

Today was a blast!  Just before lunch the waves got big and started spraying water on the bow.  It was just like riding a ride at six flags.  Everybody got soaked.  While we were leaving Long Island Sound a navy frigate sailed past It was cool.  I’m having so much fun and its great to be out on the water.
