Today
we had a little more time and took a swim call break after
breakfast before getting underway for the historic seaport of
New Bedford just to the east. We
needed to come to our home berth at State Pier for a couple
hours to fuel up and load on food in storage on the Pier
before continuing on our way. Meantime the students headed up
to explore the Whaling Museum and the New Bedford Whaling
National Historical Park. We appreciate the hospitality of the
Museum and the National Park Service volunteers and staff! By
lunchtime we were underway again heading out through the
Hurricane Wall and on toward the Cape Cod Canal. Enroute we
put the otter trawl over to take a look at the marine life of
Buzzards Bay to provide a basis for comparison for what we
might find on the other side of the Canal in the much colder
waters of Cape Cod Bay. By
5pm we were steaming through the Canal against the tide. It
had just turned the hour before but was already risen to a
couple knots. It takes so much longer to get to the other
side.

Here is the track full track
of the day from Padanaram to New Bedford to Nasketucket Bay for
a trawl, through the Cape Cod Canal to Sandwich by dinner time
for the night. That's a run of about 35 miles.
Swim call about 7:30am after
breakfast. It is a great way to start the day!

Great trawl!
Chris Newlan introduces
students to the Mantis Shrimp found in abundance in Nasketucket
Bay. Don't get too close to the front legs! They're sharp.

You can see the flounder,
crabs and shrimp.
