Today
the NEAQ Harbor Discoveries camp started on a five-day
excursion on the Schooner Ernestina.
We boarded on Fan Pier in Boston, MA and were shortly
divided into three watch groups.
We learned about emergencies and how to deal with three
types of them. Soon after we departed and
raised the sails. Then the entire crew turned up on deck for lunch.
Our wonderful cook, Laurie prepared salad, chicken
wings, tortellini with pesto, fruit, and several other dishes. Orientation
soon followed. The
new crew was shown around the schooner.
We were told and shown what out responsibilities would
be while on watch. The afternoon was spent with
students discussing and planning science projects.
Each watch made a hypothesis which we will be tested
over the next couple days. We finally came to
anchor under sail power in Gloucester Harbor, and after dinner
students gathered for evening program. Students
presented ‘feature creature’ presentations that they had
prepared. There were songs and games that kept everyone laughing.
After setting some final goals, the students turned in
for the night and began anchor watch.
Watch Goals
A – To learn the sail names,
boat parts, and line names
B – To not talk at the same time as each other and to learn
the boat parts
C – To be independent and not rely on crew to tell us what
to do.
