Day Three: August 17, 2003

This morning we awoke at 0630 to a beautiful cool day.  We managed to avoid the thunderstorms throughout the night and the sky was clear with a northerly wind.  Our anchor journal for the previous night asked student to contribute to a group rap which added a bit of humor to the morning meeting:

Anchored in Hull, we thought it might be dull
But then came the lightening, Oh how frightening
The bilge level’s jumpin, so we’re pumpin
Gwen’s in the boat – she keeps it afloat!
At midnight our watch is still underway,
We started a new page for a great day
With the bilges we checked the level of the sea
Now, excuse me, all this water in making me have to take a pee,
I’m back and happily getting our bearings,
The temperature’s too warm for the jacket I’m wearing
In the darkness and the stillness of the night,
We hear a squeaking call and a blinking light
We have one night to spare
And the heads are giving us a scare
We’re up at five with a scream and shout
We’re the last watch, we’re done, we’re out
YEAH!

After morning chores, we got underway and set the main and the rest of the sails with everyone’s help.  Students again participated in discussions throughout the day with the ISACS staff, addressing issues of diversity and deciding the best method to convey what they’ve learned back to their own schools.  We had fair winds and calm seas and sailed throughout the afternoon, coming to anchor in Salem by 1700.  As soon as we let go the anchor, we hoisted the dories over the side and students used teamwork to row around the harbor.  After a yummy dinner, students took part in the evening program where the Ernestina crew joined them in talking about the diverse population we work with and challenges of living and working in a small environment
