This
morning, 34 participant from the Victor School and Walden
Street School boarded the Ernestina.
These two schools, as well as Pelham Academy from
yesterday’s sail, are all part of the Concord Family and
Youth Services. The Victor School is a day school for students in the Acton
area, while the Walden Street School is a all girl residential
School in Concord.
The students boarded at 1030
and we set the four lower sails, the main, the fore, the
jumbo, and the jib. Students
helped to raise the sails and learned how to coil and
balentine all the lines.
After the sails were raised, participants broke up into
groups and went through a series of stations, learning how to
navigate, how to steer, how to tie knots, about the ships many
lives, how simple machines work, and about plankton.
We broke for lunch just after noon and took some time
to relax and enjoy being on the water.
Returning to port we struck our sails just after
passing by the airport. The
participants all lent a hand in furling our sails and we
returned to the dock by 1340.
After a few hours off, the
crew returned to the ship and we welcomed people aboard for
our evening member sail.
We had a total of 44 people including members, friends
and family of the crew, people from the Cape Verdean Consulate
in Boston, and Ulrich Johnson with his group from Teens
against Gang Violence.
The evening provided a
beautiful sail around Boston Harbor with a decent breeze at
times and a gorgeous sunset.
We set the four lowers and made it out to Long Island
before tacking around. It
was a relaxing sail for all involved and we look forward to
seeing everyone onboard again in the future.
