Ernestina
members boarded early this morning for the annual transit from
Boston to Portland. It was great to get reacquainted with so
many old friends, and to see the joy that Ernestina brings to
all these great folks. We got underway and have been able to
sail all day with a steady southwest breeze driving us up the
Massachusetts coast.
Our perfect weather was
briefly interrupted by a quick rainstorm that quickly blew
through and created a beautiful double rainbow. After the
squall came, a soft orange light descended and made for a
dramatic sunset. The watches are all ready to sail Ernestina
through the night as we push on toward Portland. With this
perfect breeze, our only concern is getting into Portland too
early!
Day 2: We had some prime
sailing on our way to Portland today. Ernestina cruised up
past Cape Elizabeth under her four lowers and main topsail,
bringing us in to Casco Bay with a few hours to spare. We
passed by Eagle Island and had a look at Admiral Peary's
estate: one great Arctic veteran saluting another. On our way
north we gave a salute to our friends aboard the Harvey
Gamage, and also to Bageera. We took a little
side trip through some of Portland's harbor islands before
coming into Portland to tie up next to the Spirit of
Massachusetts. Ernestina's members and crew all agreed that it
was one of the best sails in memory. These last two days won't
soon be forgotten.
