Monday
morning started off rainy; we were all cold, damp, and tired.
Little did we know what was in store for us that day!! We
learned the ropes of the boat (no pun intended) --- everything
from how to care for the wood to the proper way to steer!
Steering was a favorite part for many of the students, for
they learned there is much more to it than just spinning the
wheel! Along with steering, they had the opportunity to climb
the rigging up to the top of the boat and walk out on the
bowsprit at the front of the vessel to furl the jib. Later, a
short class was taught which covered simple machines used on
the ship and their mechanical advantages. During this class,
the students used a pulley to play a game of tug-o-war and
also had chances to do other hands-on activities.
After
seeing whales and dolphins, waving to friends on the Spirit
of Massachusetts, and eating a delicious dinner of chicken
Marseilles with brown rice, we all were ready for bed. But
there was ONE MORE surprise planned! That night we played a
game in which a crew member pulled an object, such as toilet
paper, out of a bag and asked three contestants (one from each
of the three teams) why he or she deserved to marry it!! After
lots of laughs and plenty of mosquito bites, we called it a
night. Throughout the evening and into the early morning we
all took turns doing night watch. But we didn’t mind too
much because up in the night sky was Mars!
