Beyond B.O.W. meets
Ernestina: The women of beyond B.O.W. (becoming
an outdoors woman) a program through Mass Wildlife gathered
with excitement at the top of Fan Pier in anticipation of
boarding the Ernestina. It
was a beautiful and blustery fall day.
All the women and a member of the national park service
boarded the Ernestina at 1300 hundred hours.
The crew of the Ernestina and all souls on board did a
round robin introduction exclaiming there favorite outdoor
activities. Wow
do we have an outdoorsy group:
scuba diving, fly fishing, hunting, skiing etc. We
departed from fan pier and made our way out into Boston Harbor
at 1400. The
women were quick on their feet as we hoisted the foresail and
jumbo sail. The
ladies then went through hold orientations, aquainting
themselves with all of Ernestina's fine amenities.
Donald Cann from the National Park Service, an expert
on Boston Harbor briefed
us all on the natural history and legends of the Boston Harbor
Islands. After some warm drinks and more layers
the ladies were briefed in navigation and knots.
Annie lead an exciting lesson on navigation; utilizing
the many navigational aids of the Boston harbor Narrows.
Mary Meehan our fearless volunteer made these ladies
into bowline fanatics. We
dropped the hook at 5:30 with a beautiful sunset in the lee of Peddocks Island. Dinner was served promptly and
all were well fed and raving about the wonderful chocolate
pecan cookies. The
women were exposed to the many lives of the Ernestina, through
historical photographs and maritime readings.
All participants hunkered down into sleeping bags and
blankets looking forward to a brilliant starry night for
anchor watch. Captain:
